The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
